Sunrise Mass

Central Coast Philharmonia performed Sunrise Mass by Norwegian-American composer Ola Gjeilo, a contemporary choral work widely admired for its luminous textures and expressive lyricism.
Commissioned in 2007 and premiered in 2008, Sunrise Mass reflects Gjeilo’s distinctive compositional voice, shaped by both classical choral traditions and cinematic influences. The work draws subtle inspiration from composers such as Brahms, Britten, and Bach, while remaining accessible and resonant for modern audiences.
The performance formed part of Central Coast Philharmonia’s 2024 concert series and highlighted the choir’s engagement with contemporary sacred repertoire. Characterised by rich harmonies and a contemplative spiritual atmosphere, the work offered a reflective exploration of the expressive power of the human voice.
