Magnificat

The Magnificat is one of the oldest Christian hymns, with its text drawn from the Gospel of Luke (1:46–55). Often referred to as the canticle of Mary, or Mary’s song of praise, it is Mary’s joyful response to the greeting of her cousin Elizabeth and has long been spoken or sung in Christian worship. Many composers have drawn on this text for liturgical purposes, reflected in the two splendid settings presented in this concert.
J.S. Bach’s Magnificat has been described as “an exhilarating and innovative ride through swift contrasts, alive with freshness and vitality, embodying Mary’s youthfulness in light of her profound task.” — Carol Talbeck
Soloists:
- Anna Sandström: Soprano I
- Vivien Caldwell: Soprano II
